AFCON 2027

AFCON 2027 stadiums: venues in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda

CAF has not yet published the final list of AFCON 2027 venues or named the stadiums for the opening match and the final. What is known comes from CAF's inspection visits (February and September 2026) and the host governments' building programmes: two new national stadiums in Nairobi and Arusha, a new stadium in Hoima, and renovations in Dar es Salaam, Kampala and Nairobi. In September 2026 CAF president Patrice Motsepe said preparations were behind schedule but ruled out any postponement. This page lists every ground CAF has inspected, with its status and only those capacities that two sources agree on.

What CAF has confirmed so far

CAF's inspection team toured all three countries in February 2026 (the visit ended on February 17), visiting Kasarani, Nyayo and Talanta in Nairobi; the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam, the Samia Suluhu Hassan Stadium in Arusha and the Amaan and Fumba stadiums in Zanzibar; and the Mandela National Stadium in Kampala and Hoima City Stadium. A follow-up eight-day mission in early September 2026 returned to Talanta, Mandela National Stadium, Benjamin Mkapa and Arusha, along with training grounds, hotels and airports.

After that mission, CAF president Patrice Motsepe said on September 18–22, 2026 that preparations in all three countries were behind schedule and that some venues were below the required standard, but that there was "not the slightest consideration of a postponement" and no plan B; CAF wants every stadium ready for test events by January 2027. Ahead of that, the qualifiers themselves are the first test: Kenya played Eritrea at Nyayo on September 26, Tanzania hosted Guinea-Bissau at the New Amaan Complex in Zanzibar on September 25, and Uganda meet Libya at Hoima City Stadium on September 29 — the first competitive Cranes match outside the Kampala area.

CAF's own tournament guide still says that "the stadiums and host cities are yet to be officially confirmed", and no announcement has been made about which country stages the opening match on June 19, 2027 or the final on July 17, 2027. Reports in the Kenyan, Ugandan and Tanzanian press have mentioned additional candidate grounds — Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega, Akii Bua Stadium in Lira and Dodoma — but none of these was on CAF's inspection itinerary, so they are not listed as venues here.

Nyayo National StadiumNairobiRefurbished; CAF's inspection report suggested it may serve as a training ground rather than a match venueNot confirmed

Kenya's flagship venue is the new 60,000-seat stadium at Talanta Sports City on Ngong Road, which President Ruto agreed in December 2025 to rename the Raila Odinga International Stadium after the former prime minister, who died in October 2025. Construction reached its final phase in early 2026. The Moi International Sports Centre at Kasarani closed for a full overhaul; sources differ on its post-renovation capacity (48,000 to 60,000), so no figure is given here. Nyayo National Stadium was refurbished for the 2024 African Nations Championship, but CAF's March 2026 inspection report suggested it "may more realistically be considered as a training ground".

Tanzania: Dar es Salaam, Arusha and Zanzibar

The 60,000-seat Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania's largest ground, closed for six months of work on the pitch, floodlights and hospitality areas. The purpose-built Samia Suluhu Hassan Stadium in Arusha (30,000) is the most advanced new project in the country; CAF inspectors visited it on September 3, 2026 and said they were satisfied with progress. The two Zanzibar grounds, Amaan and the new Fumba Stadium, were inspected in February 2026, but CAF's report asked the Tanzanian government for a formal decision on their roles, so their inclusion is not confirmed.

Uganda: Kampala and Hoima

Mandela National Stadium (Namboole)KampalaExisting stadium; major upgrade and expansion under wayNot confirmed

Hoima City Stadium, built by the Turkish contractor Summa and opened on December 24, 2025, is Uganda's first completed AFCON venue: a 20,000-seat stadium with a 2,000-seat indoor arena alongside it. CAF's inspection flagged operational items to fix (spectator segregation and dressing rooms among them). The Mandela National Stadium at Namboole, Kampala, is being upgraded and expanded; its planned post-expansion capacity has been reported as 64,125 by a single source, so it is left unconfirmed here.

Opening match and final venue

CAF has not announced where the opening match or the final will be played. When CAF confirmed the tournament dates in May 2026 it said the decision on which host stages the opener and the final "is expected in due course", and in September 2026 CAF was reported to be withholding the decision until it is sure the chosen stadium will be ready. Nairobi's new stadium is the largest venue under construction and the most-tipped choice, but no source has confirmed it as the final venue, so this page will be updated only when CAF makes an announcement.
