How the tie was set up

Group J winners and defending champions Argentina met Group B winners Switzerland in Match 100, the last of the four quarter-finals. Argentina had come from 2–0 down to beat Egypt 3–2 in Atlanta in the Round of 16, while Switzerland beat Colombia 4–3 on penalties after a goalless draw in Vancouver. Argentina came through 3–1 after extra time to book a place in the second semi-final (Match 102, July 15, Atlanta) against England, 2–1 extra-time winners over Norway in Match 99.

Result and recap

Argentina 3, Switzerland 1 after extra time. Alexis Mac Allister headed Argentina in front in the 10th minute from a Lionel Messi cross, and Dan Ndoye equalised for Switzerland in the 67th. Breel Embolo was sent off for a second yellow card in the 72nd minute, and the tie went to extra time, where Julián Álvarez restored Argentina's lead with a strike from outside the box in the 112th minute before Lautaro Martínez sealed it on the counter in extra-time stoppage time (120+1').

Argentina advance to the second semi-final: Match 102, July 15, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta, against England, 2–1 extra-time winners over Norway (Match 99). Switzerland are eliminated.
