In extra time, substitute Ferran Torres scored the only goal from close range in the 106th minute to hand Spain their second World Cup, sixteen years after the first; Torres was named player of the match. Argentina, the defending champions, fell short of becoming the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to retain the trophy. The final was played in front of 80,663 at MetLife Stadium and refereed by Slavko Vinčić of Slovenia. England had taken third place the day before with a 6–4 win over France in Miami.
