Europe: seven more places through the play-offs

UEFA's four League A group winners qualified directly. The other seven European places, plus one entry to the play-off tournament, are settled in two rounds of two-legged play-offs: round 1 with first legs on Friday, October 9 and second legs on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, and round 2 on November 26 – December 5, 2026. The seven best-ranked round-2 winners qualify; the lowest-ranked winner goes to the play-off tournament. Round 2 pairings are already set: the Greece/England winner meets Slovakia/Ukraine, Lithuania/Sweden play Czechia/Scotland, Hungary/Netherlands face Türkiye/Slovenia, Romania/Norway meet Albania/Wales, Belarus/Italy play Finland/Serbia, Croatia/Iceland face Northern Ireland/Portugal, Kosovo/Austria play Israel/Switzerland and Kazakhstan/Republic of Ireland meet Belgium/Poland. Path 1 pairs the League A second- and third-placed teams with League C winners and best runners-up; Path 2 pairs fourth-placed League A sides and League B winners with League B runners-up and third-placed teams. England, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Italy all have to come through the play-offs.

North and Central America: the Concacaf W Championship

The eight-team Concacaf W Championship is played in Texas from November 27 to December 5, 2026 — quarter-finals at Texas Health Mansfield Stadium in Mansfield, then the semi-finals, third-place match and final at Shell Energy Stadium in Houston. The four semi-finalists qualify directly for Brazil; the four quarter-final losers meet in play-in matches on December 2, with the two winners going to the play-off tournament. The field is Canada, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Haiti, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama and the United States — so the four-time champions USA are not yet qualified.

The play-off tournament: the last three places

Ten teams contest the last three places: two each from Asia (Uzbekistan and Chinese Taipei), Africa (Ghana and South Africa), South America (Venezuela and Ecuador) and Concacaf (to be decided), plus Papua New Guinea from Oceania and the eighth-ranked UEFA play-off winner. A preliminary phase from November 24 to December 5, 2026 is a single round-robin of six teams — Uzbekistan, Chinese Taipei, Ghana, South Africa, Papua New Guinea and Ecuador — with the top two joining the four byes (Venezuela, the two Concacaf play-in winners and the UEFA entrant) in a final phase of three single-leg knockout matches on February 23 – March 6, 2027. FIFA drew the preliminary phase in Zurich on August 20, 2026 (matchday 1: Uzbekistan v Papua New Guinea, Chinese Taipei v South Africa, Ghana v Ecuador); the host venue had still not been announced by late September 2026. The three winners are the last teams into the eight groups, whose placeholders are drawn on December 11, 2026.
