How the Round of 16 bracket works

The Round of 16 is the second knockout stage of the expanded 48-team World Cup: eight single-elimination ties, numbered Match 89 to Match 96, played from July 4 to July 7, 2026. Level ties go to extra time and then penalties — there are no replays. The draw is split into two halves that only meet in the final on July 19 at New York New Jersey Stadium.

The bracket rails above show the quarter-final pairings: the winners of Matches 89 and 90 meet on one side, the winners of 91 and 92 on the other side of the left half; on the right half, the winners of 93 and 94 pair off, as do the winners of 95 and 96. All four quarter-finals are now decided: France beat Morocco 2–0 (Match 97), Spain beat Belgium 2–1 (Match 98), England beat Norway 2–1 (Match 99) and Argentina beat Switzerland 3–1 (Match 100). Both semi-finals are now done too: Spain beat France 2–0 in Dallas on July 14, and Argentina beat England 2–1 in Atlanta on July 15 — see the semi-final results. Spain face Argentina in the final on Sunday, July 19 at New York New Jersey Stadium.
